Introduction

At the request of Victoria Gussman, Director of Property Resource Management, the backyard of the Fields House underwent a Phase II archaeological assessment. This property located at 212 North Henry Street (Block 31, Building 7) underwent its first archaeological examination in anticipation of construction activities associated with the renovation of the structure. The property lies within the historic boundaries of Williamsburg and was settled early in the town's history (Figure 1). The site has the potential to yield substantial information about the activities and life-styles of its residents, some of who were very prominent in this eighteenth-century community.

The excavation began on January 10, 1994 and took one week to complete. Project archaeologist Dwayne Pickett supervised a field crew made up of Anna Agbe-Davis, Mary Cate Garden, Fred Smith, Bruce Sterling, and Jeff Watts. Laboratory processing was performed by laboratory technician Susan Wiard and illustrations were done by Christina Adinolfi.

Historical Overview

In 1710 Dr. William Cocke was granted an eight lot block of land which included the modern day Fields house property. Dr. Cocke was the personal physician to Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood and is believed to have been granted this land because of his important position. By 1712, Dr. Cocke had advanced to the position of Secretary of the Virginia Colony, and by the following year was appointed to the Governor's Council. Documentary research indicates that Dr. Cocke and his wife Elizabeth Catesby-Cocke constructed an elaborate house on the property along with several outbuildings.

After Dr. Cocke's death John Pratt acquired the property. Pratt controlled the property until 1724 when he sold it to his nephew's widow Elizabeth Cocke-Pratt, who was also Dr.Cocke's daughter. Elizabeth bought the property for 324, the same price that John Pratt had paid for it four years earlier. In 1725 Elizabeth married Colonel Thomas Jones, a wealthy merchant, who was also a member of the King William County Militia. The Jones' appear to have lived very elegantly as documented by the account books of carpenter James Wray, who was contracted to do some work on the property. He noted the presence of an elaborate dwelling along with several out buildings including a well, stables, a laundry building, and an extensive garden. Wray's letters suggest that this garden might have contained dogwoods and other rare trees. This is very plausible considering that Elizabeth Cocke-Pratt-Jones uncle was the famous naturalist Mark Catesby. The 1732 will of Colonel Jones contains a detailed report on the Jones family holdings. The will shows that the family owned a well furnished eight room dwelling house with new additions. Letters and other documents suggest that in 1728/29 there were at least twelve people living on the property including some of Elizabeth's younger siblings. In 1750, Colonel Jones moved his family to Hanover County Virginia. The property was then leased to William Williams in 1752. In 1753 the property was again put up for sale or lease. Colonel Jones died 1758 leaving some confusion about the ownership of his properties. At his estate sale, none of his properties were put up for sale. This may mean that his property in Williamsburg, which included the Fields House property, was either sold prior to his death or simply continued to be owned by Elizabeth until her death in 1761. Another possibility is that the property was divided up between the carpenters James Wray and James Hubbard after Colonel Jones death. Not much is known about the property between 1758-1782. By 1782, college maps show J. Prentis on the property. The Frenchman's map of the same year shows two large structures and two out buildings on the property. Prentis transferred the property to John Goodall in 1810. The property was then sold to Robert B. Randolph in 1829 who in turn sold it to John Gregory. By 1841, the property was in the hands of Robert H. Armistead. Before the start of the Civil War John S. Charles described the property has having no standing structures on it. Sometime between 1782-1861 the structures described above were no longer in existence. This block of land finally became part of the Cole family properties between 1861-1884 (Stephenson 1961).

Physical Description

The project area is located at 212 North Henry Street (Block 31, Building 7) in Williamsburg Virginia. This location puts the property at the north western corner of the city's historic area. The area tested on the property is located directly behind an early twentieth century house which is located at the far eastern end of the property. The backyard of this lot measures approximately thirty-eight meters by fifteen meters and consists of a slightly raised flat grassy area with sparse vegetation. The yard is bounded to the north and south by an insubstantial fence, to the east by the house structure, and to the west by an alley. In the middle of the backyard exist a carport with an attached shed.

4

Methods

The testing strategy for this project called for the placement of 75 x 75 cm test units systematically spaced throughout the backyard. The intervals between these units were sometimes collapsed in order to assess partially uncovered features. This systematic approach insured adequate coverage of the backyard and identification of any structures or activity areas. This approach allowed for the retrieval of a representative sample of artifacts, the accurate recording of stratigraphy, and a tentative assessment of any uncovered subsurface features.

A coordinate system was established from a single datum point located at the eastern end of the backyard. Temporary coordinates and context numbers were assigned to each unit accordingly. All measurements were metric, the standard recording practice for the Department of Archaeological Research. All test units were excavated stratigraphically with all the soil being sifted through ΒΌ-inch mesh. All artifacts were collected regardless of age. A description of all the layers and features was recorded using the Department's standardized forms. All features were drawn in plan and photographed before being excavated. A single typical and several atypical profiles were also drawn and photographed. Artifacts were bagged, washed, numbered, and cataloged. A complete inventory of the artifacts recovered can be found in the appendix of this report. These artifacts are now stored at the Department of Archaeological Research.

5

Results

A total of fourteen test units were excavated in the backyard of the Fields House (Figure 2) These units uncovered four features along with several layers of intact stratigraphy. In different areas of the yard the stratigraphy ranged from two to seven layers, however the most common sequence contained four layers. These four layers appeared in half of the units. A topsoil measuring from six to ten centimeters thick was found throughout the site. It consisted of a very dark grayish brown loam (10YR3/2) and contained very few artifacts. A virtually sterile layer of yellowish brown redeposited subsoil fill (10YR5/6) four to six centimeters thick was found beneath the topsoil. Below this layer was a dark brown silty loam (10YR3/3) ranging from fifteen to twenty-five centimeters in thickness. This layer was found throughout the site and contained a large number of artifacts. Beneath this was a second artifact laden brown layer (10YR5/3), which was mottled with a pale brown silty clay loam (10YR6/3). This layer ranged from thirteen to twenty-five centimeters thickness. This site is typical of the historic area because it contained several modern disturbances. These disturbances included utility trenches, small pipelines, and an oil tank. Artifacts from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries were commonly found within the disturbed layers. Two different time periods are represented at the Fields House. There is an eighteenth-century artifact scatter concentrated near the present structure. This scatter cannot be associated with any known structures at this time. A large, late nineteenth/early twentieth century artifact scatter is also present on this property. This scatter is largely concentrated in the area just east of the present day carport.

Feature 1. Brick Rubble Fill

Units 102N/104E and 102N/100E, located just west of the present day structure, each contained a brown dark brown sandy loam layer (10YR4/3). This layer occurred beneath RR167202 Figure 2. Location of Test Units 6 the mottled pale brown layer. Subsoil was not reached in unit 102N/104E because of ground water, but was reached in unit 102N/100E. The layer had a large amount of brick fragments associated with it (Figure 3). One whole decorative coping brick was recovered from this feature which was undiagnostic. The presence of the brick fragments suggest that it might be associated with a structure. The late nineteenth century date from the layers above suggest that this feature is associated with the late occupation of the property.

Feature 2. Post Hole

An ovate shaped post hole was found in unit 97N/94E (Figure 4). The hole measured thirty-nine by thirty centimeters and was thirty centimeters deep. The fill was made up of a dark grayish brown loam (10YR4/2). Artifacts recovered from this hole range from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth century. The post hole cuts a layer formed around the turn of the century which contained a large number of artifacts. This post hole maybe related to a storage structure associated with the twentieth century occupation of the property.

Feature 3. Crushed Brick Lens

Two separate lenses of crushed brick were found in the west profile of unit 97N/84E, after it was excavated, and in unit 102N/84E (Figure 5). The lens in unit 102N/84E had a very distinct boundary and extended out fifteen centimeters from the west wall of the unit. RR167203 Figure 3. Profile of Feature 1 7 RR167204 Figure 4. Profile of Feature 2 RR167205 Figure 5. Profile of Feature 3 8 These lenses were approximately four to five centimeters thick and occurred in the dark brown layer (10YR3/3) which sealed the mottled pale brown layer (10YR5/3, and 10YR6/3). No artifacts were recovered from these features. One diagnostic artifact, a wire nail with a date of post 1850, was recovered in the layer underneath one of the lenses. This suggests that this brick is probably related to the late nineteenth/early twentieth- century occupation of the property. These lenses are thought to be related because of their close proximity, similar orientation, and similar characteristics.

Feature 4. Crushed Brick Layer

A layer of crushed brick with a very distinct boundary was found in unit 102N/74E (Figure 6). This layer covered over three quarters of the unit and was oriented in an east-west fashion. It contained medium to large sized brick fragments and measured between four and twelve centimeters thick. The brick layer cut the same layer as the brick lenses and sealed the mottled pale brown layer. Both the feature and the layer directly below it contained no artifacts. This feature is not believed to be associated with the brick lenses because it is oriented in a different direction and because of differences in its thickness and brick fragment size.

Interpretations

The archaeological investigation of the Fields house property identified two areas of artifact concentrations (Figure 7). The first of these concentrations was an eighteenth century scatter that occurred adjacent to the present day structure. The second was a concentration of late nineteenth/early twentieth-century artifacts, which was located just to the east of the carport/shed structure. Few artifacts were recovered west of the carport/shed structure, which was the area that contained the two crushed brick features. The eighteenth century artifact concentration is not associated with any currently known features. This concentration is located so close to the present structure that the remains of such features were probably destroyed when the house was built. The late nineteenth/early twentieth- century concentration is associated with one feature, a post hole. The large number of artifacts and the identification of a single post hole suggests that this area in front of the carport/shed contained a storage structure dating to around the turn of the century. The area west of the carport/shed contains two crushed brick features RR167207 Figure 7. Distribution of Eighteenth and Nineteenth- Century Artifacts 10 which may represent the remnants of two separate structures. The lack of artifacts suggests that this was not an extensively used area. These features may represent storage structures or be the remains of landscape features such as a walkway or wall. These types of features would normally have few artifacts associated with them.

Very few artifacts dating to the first half of the nineteenth century were recovered by this excavation. This can be explained by looking at the documentary evidence. Just before the start of the Civil War the property has been described as containing no standing structures. The last mention of these buildings comes from the 1782 Frenchman's map which shows four structures on the property. Sometime between 1782 and 1861 these structures disappeared. From looking at the artifact assembledge there are very few that date between 1805 and 1845. This suggest that the structures were no longer in use during this period. They may have possibly been abandoned around the time Robert B. Randolph acquired the property in 1829.

11

Conclusions

No features dating to the eighteenth century were located on the property. The structures identified in the historical review were not located within the test area. A single eighteenth century activity area was identified near the present day house. The construction of the Fields house certainly destroyed any archaeological remains that may have been associated with this artifact scatter. All the features that were uncovered during this testing dated to the late nineteenth/early twentieth century occupation of the property. The presence of a thick twentieth century fill layer will protect any early remains not identified by this testing from construction activities associated with the paving of the backyard. Therefore no further work is recommended.
